Maize flowers are pollinated by wind, In wind pollinated plants, the chances of loss of pollen grains are more due to which most of the pollen grains fail to reach the appropriate stigma. So to compensate this loss and increase the chances of pollination, the maize flowers produce large number of pollen grains.
