Question

rn

Transverse waves are transmitted through solids and not through liquids and gases as the latter does not possess any internal transverse restoring force (shear strength). wat is latter n shear strength out here?

Solution

When a wave passes through a thick solid medium where its lateral dimension is large and cannot be neglected. As because of the matter present on the lateral sides no strains as such takes place which in other words can be said medium opposes strains perpendicular to the direction of propagation by generating stress known as lateral stress. Now displacements that takes place perpendicular to the propagation of the waves are restored due to the axial elasticity of the medium. This restoring force is called transverse restoring force or shear stress.
