Question

painting of an iron gate prevents it form rusting . why?

Open in App
Solution

Rusting of iron takes place because there are moisture and oxygen present in atmosphere which react with elemental iron and forms its oxide.if represent the reaction as conventional equation then it can be as-

Fe + H2O + O2 → Fe(OH)2 → → Fe2O3 (rust)

But, when we paint the gate, it prevents the contact of iron to moisture and oxygen and hence the rusting of iron does not take place.
