Requirements for the execution of experiment are:- Potato, standard sugar solution, wash bottle, test tubes and test tube rack, scalpel, cutting board, weighing scales, paper towels, ruler, stop watch.
Procedure:-
1. Cut equal pieces of potato 4 cm in length using ruler and scalpel on the cutting board.
2. Then using weighing scale weigh the potato pieces and record the weight.
3. Then pour 10ml of sugar solution (1M) in test tube.
4. Now place the potato piece in the test tube containing sugar solution and leave it for 30 minutes.
5. After 30 minutes remove the potato piece from the test tube.
6. Place the potato piece once again on the scales and work out the percentage change.
7. Repeat this experiment for 0.5, 0.25 and 0.125 concentration solutions of sugar solution and record the changes.
Results will show that potato pieces kept in higher concentration of sugar solution will loose their some amount of weight because they will loose water from them via osmosis whereas potato pieces kept in pure water or very low concentration of sugar solution will show negligible or no change in their weight because they will either loose no water or very less water from their cells.
