Question

phenol is soluble in water?

if yes , then more or less than alcohol and why?

Open in App
Solution

Phenol is partially soluble in water because it has an ability to form hydrogen bonding with water molecules. However phenol is less soluble than alcohols because of the presence of a large hydrophobic benzene ring. This benzene ring being water repelling causes hindrance during the solubility of phenol in water.
