Question

photorespirations is same as calvin cycle??

Open in App
Solution

No, they are not same. Calvin cycle is the result of carboxylase activity of Rubisco enzyme, whereas photorespiration is the result of oxygenase activity of Rubisco enzyme.

Photorespiration is a phenomenon in which there is no formation of ATP or NADPH, but there is utilization of ATP with release of CO2. It is also considered a wasteful process.

Calvin cycle occurs in all photosynthetic plants, The primary acceptor of CO2 is a 5-carbon ketose sugar called Ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP). Glucose is formed in calvin cycle.
