Question

Predict in which of the following entropy increases or decreases. Give reason a liquid crystallizes into a solid when the temperature of a crystalline solid is raised from 0K to 115K

1. 2NaHCO3 (s) → Na2CO3 + 2CO2 + H2O

2. H2 → 2H (g)

Solution

Entropy is a measure of disorder.
1) liquid crystallizes into a solid
Entropy decreases as particles in solid state are closely arranged as compared to liquid thus having less disorder and less entropy.

2) when the temperature of a crystalline solid is raised from 0K to 115K
As temperature will increase the solid will start to melt leading to increase in disorder i.e. entropy

3) 2NaHCO3 (s) → Na2CO3 + 2CO2 + H2O
The no. of molecules in the reactant are 2 while the same in the product are 4 thus entropy is increasing.

4) H2 → 2H
The no. of species increases from 1 to 2 thus entropy also increases.
