1. Electrolytic refining
Principle- On passing electric current, the metal ions from the electrolyte are deposited at the cathode in the form of pure metal while the equivalent amount of metal dissolves from the anode into the electrolyte in the form of metal ions.
2. Zone refining
Principle- The impurities are more soluble in the melt than in the solid state of the metal.
3. Vapour phase refining
Principle- Certain metals are converted to their volatile compounds while the impurities are not affected during compound formation.
4. Froth floatation method
Principle- Difference in the wetting properties of the ore and gangue particles with water and oil.
5. Magnetic separation
Principle- Difference in magnetic properties of the ore components.
