Question

Q.a sample of vitamin c contains 2.48 * 10power 25 atoms.how many moles of oxygen atoms are present in the sample?

Open in App
Solution

Vitamin C has the chemical formula C6H8O6. Thus, in one molecule of vitamin C, there are in total 20 atoms (6 atoms of carbon, 8 atoms of hydrogen and 6 atoms of oxygen). Now in one mole of vitamin C, there are 6.023 X 1023 molecules of vitamin C. Therefore total number of atoms in one mole of vitamin C will be

= 20 X 6.023 X 1023

= 1.2046 X 1025

The percentage of oxygen atoms in the total number of atoms in one molecule of vitamin C

= (6 X 6.023 X 1023 X 100) / 1.2046 X 1025

= 30 %

So, the number of oxygen atoms in the sample of vitamin C which contains 2.48 X 1025 atoms will constitute 30%.

Hence (30 / 100) X 2.48 X 1025 = 7.44 X 1024

Therefore, in a sample of vitamin C containing 2.48 X 1025 atoms, the number of oxygen atoms will be 7.44 X 1024.
