Question

Q. The distance of planet Jupiter from the sun is 5.2 times that of the Earth. Find the time period of revolution of Jupiter around the Sun.

Solution

let's use the formula of Kepler's Third Law, it states that

T = k.r3/2

where

T is the period of revolution

r is the size of the orbit

and k is a constant

now, let's say for earth

T = k.r3/2 (1)

and for Jupiter

T' = k.r'3/2

here we are given that r' = 5.2r

so,

T' = k.(5.2r)3/2 (2)

now, from (1) and (2), we get

T' / T = (r' / r)3/2

or

T' = T.(5.2)3/2

here T, the time period of revolution of earth = 1 year

so,

the time period of Jupiter will be

T' = 11.86 years
