Women pressed for dress reform. The suffrage movement also developed during this time.
a. There was agitation against women’s clothes in Europe as well in America.
b. Doctors explained the ill effects of tight clothes which affected the spine and long flowing gowns which were unhygienic.
c. It was argued by these movements that if women wore loose and comfortable clothes, they could start working and become independent.
d. Mrs. Amelia Bloomer, an American was the first dress reformer to launch loose tunics worn over ankle – length trousers. The trousers were known as ‘bloomers’, ‘rational'.
e. The radical dress society also came about in England in 1881.
f. The reformers did not immediately succeed in changing social values. They had to face ridicule and hostility.
