Question

Q1 If we draw the structure of cyclo pentane and bond each atom of carbon with 2 hydrogen atoms we get molecular formula C5H10 here we used single bond with each atom but if we see the basic formula of alkane we get CnH2n+2 but here we get the basic formula ofC5H10 asCnH2n ? How is this possible?

Solution

This is happening because cyclopentane is not an alkane , it belongs to the category of cycloalkanes and hence it doesn't follow the general formula of alkanes. They are cyclic alkanes having the general formula same as that of alkenes i.e CnH2n
