Solution

Cricket in colonial India was initially a symbol of superior social and racial status. Later, as it gained popularity among the natives, it became organised on the basis of race and religion. Clubs were established, based on the idea of religious community. In its early days, first class cricket was played on communal lines. Thus, the sport of cricket, instead of being a unifying force, became a divisive element.
