Bread mold (fungus) might be growing on the slice. Bread molds are saprophytes which feed on dead and decay organic matter. They secrete digestive juices directly on the food. The enzymes present in digestive juice breaks down the food and then it is absorbed by the bread mold. Such nutrition is known as saprophyitc nutrition.
