Question

Scandium is far away from boron in the periodic table! Then why did Mendeleev call it eka-boron?

Open in App
Solution

"Eka" prefix was used for the elements which were unknown and were not discovered whenever theorists are doing some predictions. Mendeleev also did its own predictions and during that time he came across elements about which he has less information so he predicted rare earth elements as ekaboron (Eb) , ekaaluminium (Ea), ekamaganese (Em), Ekasilicon (Es) which ultimately proved to be good predictors of scandium, gallium, technetium and germanium.

Eka-boron compound got discovered which were unknown. It had the properties similar to that of boron, so it is named as Eka-boron.
