  • Indian space programme was driven by vision of Dr Vikram Sarabhai . he is considered as the father of Indian Space Programme.
  • Space activities started in the 1960s.
  • It started with the objective of acheiving self reliance and developing capability to apply to national tasks
  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully operationalised two major satellite systems

1)Indian National Satellites (INSAT) : This was for communication services

2)Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) : This was for management of natural resources

Additionally, it developed:

1) Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV): for launching IRS type of satellites

2) Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) for launching INSAT type of satellites.
