Short plants do not survive too long without water, they soon die. What feature of big trees leads to their survival without water for months (water during the rainy season only)?

Short plants have short roots which cannot draw moisture from the deeper layer of soil, therefore these plants need to be regularly watered while large trees have large roots which penetrate into the deeper layers of soil that provide moisture.
