Show that metal oxides Al2O3 and ZnO are amphoteric in nature .

ZnO and Al2O3 are amphoteric oxides as they react with both acids and bases. It means , it possesses both acidic and basic properties.

Al2O3 + 6HCl ----------> 2AlCl3 + 3H2 (reaction with acid)

Al2O3 + 2NaOH → 2NaAlO2 + H2O (reaction with base)

ZnO + 2HCl ----> ZnCl2 + H2O (reaction with acid)

ZnO + 2NaOH + H2O -----> Na2 [Zn (OH)4](reaction with base)
