some chairs are arranged in a number of rows in a classroom. if 4 chairs are kept in one row , three rows are left vacant and if 3 chairs are kept in one row, 3 chairs are left. what is the total number of chairs

Open in App
Solution

Let x be the number of rows and y be the number of chairs.

If 4 chairs are kept in one row , three rows are left vacant:

Then the number of rows filled with chairs = x-3

Total number of chairs, y = (x-3)4 ...(1)

If 3 chairs are kept in one row, 3 chairs are left:

Total number of chairs, y = 3x+3 ...(2)

From (1) and (2)

(x-3)4 = 3x+3

4x-12=3x+3

x=15

From (1), total number chairs = (x-3)4 = (15-3)4 = 12*4 =48
