The state of a compound at room temperature depends on the intermolecular attraction of the compound. If a particular compound has strong intermolecular attraction its molecules will be held together firmly and the state will be solid. As we move from solid state to gaseous the intermolecular forces of attraction grow weaker and weaker being the lowest in gaseous state.
