sound waves are vibrations. so how can they be reflected from a hard surface? why dont soft objects reflect sound?
As sound wave travels by creating compression and rarefaction which is a kind of disturbance. The waves travel in the medium due to the elasticity of the medium. You can resemble its phenomena with the compression and depression of spring. When a spring is compressed and left, it moves with compression and depression and if it strikes a wall it gets reflected back once again with compression and depression. The disturbance in the elastic medium also propagates in the same way and gets reflected from the surface.
