Question

A 0.01 M aqueous solution of acetic acid has an osmotic pressure of 0.24 atm. However a solution of acetic acid in acetone has osmotic pressure of 0.12 atm. How do you account for this

Solution

Dear student!
Due to addition of acetone their occurs lowering in temperature, due to its lower boiling point and it lowers the temperature of acetic acid solution than the aqueous acetic acid solution and so there occurs difference in their osmotic pressure as:

P = CRT , when C and R are constant then P is directly proportional to T, if T decreases, P will automatically decrease by same ratio.
