Question

A1.0 m long metallic rod is rotated with an angular frequency of 400rad s−1 aboutan axis normal to the rod passing through its one end. The other endof the rod is in contact with a circular metallic ring. A constantand uniform magnetic field of 0.5 T parallel to the axis existseverywhere. Calculate the emf developed between the centre and thering.

Solution

Lengthof the rod, l = 1 m

Angularfrequency,ω = 400rad/s

Magneticfield strength, B = 0.5 T

One endof the rod has zero linear velocity, while the other end has a linearvelocity of lω.

Averagelinear velocity of the rod,

Emfdeveloped between the centre and the ring,

Hence, the emf developed between the centre and the ring is 100 V.
