Question

a mixture of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate is known to contain 0.6 moles of chloride ions and 0.2 moles of sulphate ions. What is the number of moles of magnesium ions present ?

Open in App
Solution

1 mole of Magnesium chloride gives 1 mole of magnesium ion and 2 mole of chloride ions.

In magnesium chloride,

Number of moles of magnesium ion = 1/2 x number of Chloride ions

Number of moles of magnesium ion = 1/2 x 0.6 = 0.3 moles

1 mole of Magnesium sulphate gives 1 mole of magnesium ion and 1 mole of sulphate ions.

In magnesium sulphate,

Number of moles of magnesium ion = number of sulphate ions

Number of moles of magnesium ion = 0.2 moles

Total number of moles of magnesium ions in the mixture of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate = 0.3+0.2 =0.5 moles
