Question

Why is the speed of sound more in steel than in water or air?

Open in App
Solution

Speed of sound in a medium is given by, v = √(E/ρ)

E = Young’s modulus for steel

E = Bulk modulus for liquid

E = Adiabatic stress for gas

ρ = Density of the medium.

Since, E of steel is very large compared to air or water, so, the speed of sound in steel is very large.
