Open in App
Solution

Both coal and petroleum are fossil fuels, in which carbon is the major constituent. They also contain other elements such as hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur in varying amounts. The combustion of coal releases carbon dioxide (along with water vapours), which is a greenhouse gas and causes global warming.
