Work doesn’t have direction; it just can be positive, negative or zero depending upon the angle between the force applied and the direction of the displacement. does this mean that + or - do not indicate a direction ?

Yes + or - indicate directions but it does indicate whether the displacement has taken place in the direction of force applied or not not anything like direction of work done since it doesn't make any sense. There is no particular direction in which the work is said to be done.
