A TYPE specimen is one which forms the basis of original description.

Different specimens can be classified as:

Holotype: The specimen used by the author as the type specimen for description of a new name

Isotype: Specimen which is duplicate of holotype

Lectotype: A type which is declared later from the original material if the type specimen is not described, missing or damaged

Isolectotype: Duplicate of lectotype

Syntype: Any specimen which is cited in the protologue if no holotype is designated

Paratype: Any specimen cited in the protologue which is neither holo, iso or syntype

Neotype: Material which is designated as type if all material for original nomenclature is missing

Epitype: A material designated as type if all other are missing or damaged
