. Steel is preferred for making permanent magnets where as soft iron is preferred for making

electromagnet . Give one reason .

Steel retains a permanent magnetic field even after the current stops flowing in the coil but soft iron loses magnetism soon after the current stops flowing in the coil. So steel is used to make permanent magnets while soft iron is used in making electromagnets.
