60% OF A POPULATION OF A CITY WERE MEN AND THE RESTS WERE WOMEN. AFTERWARDS, 840 MEN LEFT THE CITY AND 1000 WOMEN CAME TO THE CITY. AS A RESULT, THE PERCENTAGE OF MEN REDUCED TO 56%OF THE POPULATION. WHATIS THE PRESENT POPULATION OF THE CITY?
Suppose the population of the city was x in the past. Then the number of men = (600x/100)= 3x/5
Number of women = x – (3x/5) = 2x/5.
When 840 men left the city and 1000 women came to the city , then the population of the city reduced to
x – 840 + 1000 = x + 160.
Then, the number of men has reduced to (56/100)(x + 160).
From the data given in the question:
(56/100)(x + 160) = (3x/5) – 840
(14/25) (x + 160) = (3x/5) – 840
(14x/25) - (3x/5) = -840 - (14/25) × 160
-x/25 = -4648/5
x= 4648 × 5
x= 23240.
Therefore, the present population = 23240 + 160 = 23400.
