The average power developed is = 5000 hp = 3730000 W

Let P be the actual power of which 85% is utilized by the turbine.

So, 85P/100 = 3730000

=> P = 4388235.3 W

So, the energy utilized by the turbines per second is 4388235.3 J

The energy utilized per minute is = 4388235.3 × 60 = 263294118 J

Let ‘m’ be the mass of water that falls through height 50 per minute to generate energy 263294118 J

Therefore,

mgh = 263294118

=> m(10)(50) = 263294118

=> m = 526588.2 kg

Thus, 526588.2 kg water pass through the turbine per minute.
