Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The law of multiple proportions states that If two elements can combine to form more than one compound, then the masses of one element that combines with a fixed mass of the other element are in the ratio of small whole numbers.

e.g.

C and O combine and form 2 compound CO and CO2

Carbon monoxide COCarbon dioxide CO2
12 parts of mass of C = 16 parts of mass of O12 parts of mass of C = 32 parts of mass of O
16 : 32
1 : 2
Simple whole number ratio
