What is ' The Law Of Multiple Proportions' ?
Dear Student,
The law of multiple proportions states that If two elements can combine to form more than one compound, then the masses of one element that combines with a fixed mass of the other element are in the ratio of small whole numbers.
e.g.
C and O combine and form 2 compound CO and CO2
Carbon monoxide CO | Carbon dioxide CO2 |
12 parts of mass of C = 16 parts of mass of O | 12 parts of mass of C = 32 parts of mass of O |
16 : 32 | |
1 : 2 | |
Simple whole number ratio |
