Why traces of chlorine is used in Geiger Counter ?
Why argon gasnot any other noble ga is used in Geiger Counter ?
Why argon gas is kept at a temperature of 50 mm to 100 mm of mercury with less potential difference in Geiger Counter ?
Dear Student!!
When positive ion is neutralized at the cathode a considerable amount of energy is released which may be further used to knock out an electron from cathode surface. These electrons moving towards the anode produces new ionization, thus leading to discharge. For recording only the new discharge, it is necessary to stop or quench the previous discharge of +ve ions with the cathode. this can be done by adding chlorine, which exchanges charges in collision with argon. the +ve ions that reaches the reaches the cathode are chlorine ions, in general do not release electron from the cathode surface. Thus the discharge quickly stops after initial avalanche reaches the electrode.
The inert gas like Ar is used to minimize the loss of ions by recombination.
