EXPLAIN the general distribution of rainfall in India during monsoons .
The rainfall distribution is very uneven in India which can be witnessed by the fact that there exists flood like situation in Bihar, Orissa and Bengal and at the same time western part of the country is engulfed into drought. On the one hand some areas receive an annual rainfall of more than 400 cm(eg. North-eastern region and western ghats), on the other hand some parts get barely 20 cm of rainfall (eg. Desert areas of Rajasthan, Leh in Jammu & Kashmir)
The following reasons can be attributed for this uneven distribution of rainfall:
Relief and topography- The windward side of mountains and hills receive more rainfall than leeward side.
Latitudinal extent- The tropical and coastal regions and plains receive more rainfall than the plateau and desert regions in the interior.
The vagaries of the monsoon- The unpredictability of the monsoon along with phenomena like monsoon troughs and depressions lead to uneven distribution of rainfall.
