Now first discount of 20% will give = 100 – (20% of 100) = Rs. 80

Now second discount of 5% on Rs. 80 will give = 80 – (5% of 80) = Rs. 76

Overall discounted value after two successive discounts = 100 – 76 = Rs. 24

Therefore, two successive discounts of 20% and 5% are equivalent to one discount of 24%.
