Solution

I. A given chemical equation can be balanced by inspection or trial and error method. The following steps should be taken to balance a chemical equation:

1) Count and compare the number of atoms of each element on each side of the equation.

2) Balance each element, one at a time by adding coefficients in front of the formulas containing the unbalanced element.

3) Check all the other elements after each individual element is balanced to see whether, in balancing one element, other elements have become unbalanced.Make adjustments as possible.

4) Do a final check to make sure that each element and/or polyatomic ion is balanced and that the smallest coefficients have been used.

II.

1) 2 Al + 6 HCl → 2 AlCl3 + 3 H2

2) H2 + 1/2 O2 → H2O

3) 2 K + 2 H2O → 2 KOH + H2

4) C + O2 → CO2
