Question

Is there any change in counts of Platelet cell in blood, if the blood is kept aside for 1/2 hour?

Open in App
Solution

Blood platelets are the cells in blood responsible for blood clotting

There normal life span in 7 days. And half life of 2-3 days

If a blood sample is collected then the ratio of platelets is influenced by 2 factors

1. Site of aspiration of blood

If the blood is taken from the center of the blood vessel then the number of platelets will be relatively high
Whereas, if the blood is aspirated from the periphery of the vessel then the number of platelets is low in comparison to the previous.

2. Time

Time period elapsed from the time of aspiration

For say if the blood sample was collected at 10 in the morning then the number of platelets found in the blood sample will keep reducing as the time passes.
It can be calculated by their half lives.
As the blood may contain a platelet which is 6 days old or already 7 days old or just 2 days old. So even a time period of half an hour may bring a change in the count of platelets as the 7 days old would die and won't be counted .
Hence, to get the exact estimate if the number of platelets one must take a fresh blood sample and send it for calculations at the same instant.
