Question

Why is the bulb of the thermometer cylindrical in shape ?

Open in App
Solution

Hello!
A simple thermometer works on the principle that for all liquids a change in temperature results in increase in volume. That is why the mercury in the tube rises and falls depending on the contact temperature. The shape of the tube is thin and cylindrical in shape in order to increase that effect. The liquids in the cylindrical tend to rise and fall with ease.
