Question

Sulphur is like oxygen which has 6 valence electrons. So, it can obtain octet by sharing two electrons like oxygen and make a molecule of 2 atoms. Then why a sulphur molecule is made of 8 atoms?

Solution

Oxygen atom due to its small size is capable of forming pπ-pπ bond and thus forms O2 (O=O) molecule and the vander waal's force of attraction is present between Oxygen molecule, which are weak, as a result oxygen exist exist as discrete molecule (as a gas). However, Sulphur due to its large size is not able to form pπ-pπ bond but rather exists in puckered rings, with covalent bonding the adjacent Sulphur atom.
