Friction is the opposition force between surfaces that are in contact and are in motion with respect to one another.
The force of friction doesn't oppose the applied force but it opposes the motion of body.
Friction force is necessary for the movements of objects and also a moving object can't be stopped in the absence of friction. If an object is at rest, it will remain at rest unless a force moves it. In the absence of friction, even a very tiny force can give it motion.
