Question

The boiling points of a liquid rises on increasing pressure. Give reason

Open in App
Solution

The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of the liquid becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure above the liquid. Now, on increasing pressure, less number of vapours are formed and thus the temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid becomes equal to the external pressure rises.Hence, the boiling point of a liquid rises on increasing pressure.
