Question

"The earth is acted upon by the gravitational pull of the stars, planets, sun and moon" how ?

Open in App
Solution

According to Newton's law of gravitation, every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force directed along the line joining the centers of the two objects and that force remains directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This law is applicable to all the objects having mass, whether the objects are on the earth or in outer space, which includes the stars, planets, the Sun and the Moon also. The Earth attracts or pulls all the objects towards it and all the objects also attracts the Earth towards them. Thus, the Earth is also acted upon by the gravitational pull of the stars, planets, the Sun and the Moon. However, the gravitational pull depends on the products of their masse and distance between them.
Due to gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon on the Earth tides are formed on the Earth. The distance between Moon and the Earth is very small as compared to the Earth and the Sun, therefore tidal effect of Moon is larger than that due to the Sun.
