Period No. = No of shells i.e. = 4
Group No. = no. of electrons in outermost shell =2 (this rule not valid in case of transition elements)
Valency = number of valence electrons (if the valence electrons are less than or equal to 4)
= 8 - number of valence electrons (if the valence electrons are more than 4)
Therefore, valency = 2
