Solution

Following are some limitations of tidal energy, wave energy and ocean thermal energy because of which the large energy potential of sea is still unexplored:

The limitations of tidal energy:
1. Less availability of suitable sites for building tidal barrages around the world.
2. The rise and fall of sea water during high and low tides is not enough to generate electricity on a large scale.
3. Start up costs to build a tidal energy plant is high.

Limitations of wave energy:
1. Since waves are erratic, the amount of energy a wave generator can produce is unpredictable and, therefore, cannot be used as a sole reliable energy source.
2. High initial capital costs.
3. Equipment should be strong to stand against rough weather.
4. It Can harm the marine ecosystem.

Limitations of ocean thermal energy:
1. There has to be a large temperature difference between the surface water and the deep waters for best results.
2. It is only suitable in tropical regions since it needs a constant supply of warm and cold water.
3. The locations where it can be established are further limited due to storms and high tides.
4. The temperature difference is also irregular and sometimes discontinuous.
