Question

The exchange energy for stabilized electronic configuration is

A } higher for cadmium than that of palladium

B}

higher for palladium than that of cadmium

C}

16E for palladium and 12E for cadmium

D}equal for both

Solution

Electronic configuration:
Cadmium: [Kr] 4d10 5s2
Palladium: [Kr] 4d10
In the valence shell of cadmium there are two electrons in 5s sub-shell. So, no exchange is possible whereas in palladium; there are 10 electrons i.e 5 pairs of electrons in 4d sub-shell. So, 20 exchanges are possible. Hence, the exchange energy of palladium is more than cadmium
