The government in Iraq was undemocratic and is undemocratic. Justify your answer
Iraq has a history of military coups and has been under the control of various army factions or Ba'ath party from 1963 to 2003. Iraq under Saddam Hussain could not be regarded as democracy as after becoming the President of Iraq in 1979 he ran a dictatorial regime.
a. He crushed all the opposition and suppressed dissent to his rule. Saddam hussain rule was characterized by assassinations executions of his his political opponents.
b. Iraq under him engaged in severe human rights violation through persecution of ethnic minorities,merciless attack on the Kurds can be seen in this context.
c.The government in Iraq has controlled other political parties and monitored their activities.
d. Iraq has curtailed the mobility of the people particularly their right to assemble and has permitted it only if it is for the support of the dictatorial regime.
Operation Iraqi Freedom staged by US however may have given the impression to the world at large that Iraq has moved towards democracy but the it raises serious questions about the methods of bringing about democracy.
1. Imposition of democracy by external intervention itself has been argued to be undemocratic as it is believed that such a regime will not sustain.
2. Such a regime has certainly not be in tune with democratic principles.
3. Post Saddam Iraq has witnessed deep political crisis and conflict.
4. It has become victim of ethnic conflict between Shiaa and Sunni Muslim groups and has been experiencing more attacks and suicide bombings.
5.The so called parliamentary government that has come into existence Post Saddam has failed to restore confidence of the people who believe country is facing worst crisis with more dictators today ruling the regime who are unable to maintain stability.
