Solution

A chemical equation showing the combustion of magnesium in air to form magnesium oxide is as follows

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

As per the above equation, 48g of magnesium forms 80g of magnesium oxide. Thus,

mass of MgO obtained from 48g of Mg = 80g

mass of MgO obtained from 1g of Mg = 80 / 48

mass of MgO obtained from 1.216g of Mg = (80 / 48) X 1.216 g

= 2.027g

Thus, 2.027g of MgO is obtained by burning 1.216g magnesium in excess oxygen.
