Question

The motion of copper plate is damped when it is allowed to oscillate between the two poles of a magnet. What is the cause of this damping ?

Solution

When the copper plate is allowed to oscillate, the changing flux through the plate produced a strong eddy current in the direction, which opposes the cause.
Since copper is a diamagnetic substance, it gets magnetised in the opposite direction. Therefore the plate motion gets damped.
