Since the nitrogenase enzyme is inhibited in presence of oxygen, the nodule has adaptation that ensures that the enzyme is protected from the oxygen. The nodule contains a pigment called leg haemoglobin, an oxygen scavenger, which protects the oxygen-sensitive enzyme nitrogenase.
