the resistance of a 40W bulb is greater than the resistance of a 50W bulb because of the relation P is inversely proportional to R in the equation P=V2/R. looking on the other side P is directly proportional to R in the equation P=I2R and therefore in this case a 50 W bulb should have a greater resistance. why is it incorrect that the R of the 50W bulb is greater??

Look at it this way...

A bulb having a higher resistance would allow less amount of current to flow through it. Less amount of current would mean the filament the amount of emitted radiation is less and thus the power of bulb is reduced.
